Lake*A*Syst

Lake*A*Syst (Managing Shoreline Property to Protect Water Quality)is a voluntary, confidential self assessment program and has been created to help people understand how their activities can affect lake water quality. If you live on a lake or stream property, you have a special responsibility to prevent pollutants from entering the water. Since many activities on or around your property can affect water quality, you can significantly improve water happens along the shore of your property.

Three Lake*A*Syst chapters cover essential topics that every shoreline property owner or resident should be aware of. Each chapter contains key points, along with tables or worksheets that help identify and reduce home risk. The Lake*A*Syst chapters are:


  • Household Wastewater Management


  • Lawn and Garden Care


  • Stormwater Runoff Management


Common Shoreline Pollutants


  • Lawn fertilizers


  • Runoff from driveways, roofs and walkways


  • Lawn clippings and leaves (they contain phosphorus)


  • Soil from shoreline erosion


  • Lawn and garden pesticides


  • Oil and gas from boats


  • Septic system effluent
